ABOUT ENERGY HEALING

Energy healing is one of the oldest forms of healing documented among ancient cultures worldwide. The father of western medicine, Hippocrates, referred to it as “the force which flows from many people's hands.” In an Egyptian papyrus dated around 1552 B.C., the laying-on of hands technique was described as a treatment for illness. In the 5th century BC Greece, the temples of Asklepios, dedicated to the healing God Asclepius, attracted many sick people who sought miraculous healing. One of the techniques described was therapeutic touch.

In energy healing, the healer uses energy as medicine to balance and clear the human energy field. Energy healing is based on the belief that good health stems from a balanced energy field, while illness stems from an imbalanced energy field. Ancient spiritual traditions have described this energy within and surrounding the physical body. Chinese medicine refers to it as chi and forms the foundation for acupuncture. In ancient ayurvedic medicine, this energy is referred to as prana or the breath of life. In the 1600s, before the biomedical model became the dominant paradigm for health, Vitalism proposed that all living matter involved a vital force, a “metaphysical entity intrinsic to life that renders it alive.” In the mid-1800s, Von Reichenbach, while studying the nervous system, proposed a vital force that permeated and connected all living things, which he called the odic force.

When I started learning energy healing from my teacher, Deborah King, I questioned whether what I was learning was real. As an energy healer student with a background in western medicine for the last 15 years, I doubted myself and the new concepts I was learning. But over time I have grown to love and believe in what I have learned.

Healing the unseen is experiential and often mystical, and perhaps it is challenging to explain in words. Perhaps there is no clear scientific way to describe or validate all the modalities yet, as energy healing heals the many dimensions that make a person whole– the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual.

I love being an energy healer. It has allowed me to transcend the linear way of thinking in western medicine and has enabled me to align with what we call or experience as the energy of love. It has taken me on a journey from the rational into the irrational, from the world of form to the formless, and into the deep mystical world of the spirit and the Divine.
